What is Gastrin ?
Gastrin is a hormone produced by the stomach that plays an important regulatory role in the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrin promotes the digestive process primarily by stimulating gastric mucosal cells to secrete gastric acid and pepsin. In addition, gastrin can also promote gastrointestinal peristalsis, increase gastrointestinal blood circulation, and promote the repair and regeneration of gastrointestinal mucosa. Gastrin secretion is influenced by food intake, neuromodulation, and other hormones.
The importance of Gastrin screening
Gastrin is of certain importance in screening for gastric diseases. Because gastrin secretion is affected by food intake, neuromodulation, and other hormones, gastrin levels can be measured to assess the functional status of the stomach. For example, in the case of insufficient gastric acid secretion or excessive gastric acid, gastrin levels can be detected to assist in the diagnosis and evaluation of gastric acid-related diseases, such as gastric ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, etc.
In addition, abnormal secretion of gastrin may also be related to some gastric diseases, such as gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors. Therefore, in the screening and diagnosis of gastric diseases, combining the detection of gastrin levels can provide certain auxiliary information and help doctors make comprehensive assessment and diagnosis. However, it should be pointed out that the detection of gastrin levels usually needs to be combined with other clinical examinations and comprehensive analysis of symptoms and cannot be used as a basis for diagnosis alone.
