World Sepsis Day: Building an Early Defense Line Against Sepsis with Precision Diagnostic Reagents

Every year on September 13, the world observes World Sepsis Day. The global theme for 2026 is “Invest in Sepsis – Save Lives,” calling on the global medical community to increase investment in sepsis prevention and treatment. Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. In China, the in-hospital mortality rate for sepsis patients approaches 26%, and the mortality rate among ICU patients can climb to around 40%. Early identification and rapid diagnosis are key to reducing sepsis mortality.

However, early diagnosis of sepsis faces real challenges. Blood culture, as the gold standard for diagnosis, has a long culture cycle and low positivity rate, making it impossible to provide timely evidence for early clinical anti-infective treatment. Against this backdrop, serological marker detection reagents have become indispensable auxiliary diagnostic tools in clinical practice, thanks to their convenience, speed, and ability to provide early indications of infection status through in vitro testing.

Currently, commonly used sepsis-related markers include acute-phase proteins such as procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP), as well as inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6). Among these, PCT rises rapidly during systemic bacterial infection, and the degree of elevation correlates with disease severity; dynamic monitoring can also guide adjustments to antibiotic therapy. In recent years, Presepsin, a novel marker reflecting monocyte/macrophage activation, has attracted widespread attention. Its plasma concentration increases during bacterial infection and decreases after antibiotic treatment, offering a new perspective for early sepsis diagnosis.

Given the complex pathophysiological process of sepsis, a single marker is difficult to meet all clinical needs. Combined detection of multiple markers and multi-dimensional assessment incorporating machine learning models are becoming important directions for improving the diagnostic accuracy of sepsis. From nanomaterial-based optical sensors to microfluidic immunoassay platforms, the technological iteration of sepsis detection reagents is accelerating.
