What is HFMD

HFMD is an infectious disease caused by enterovirus. There are more than 20 types of enterovirus causing HFMD, among which coxsackievirus A16 (Cox A16)and enterovirus 71 (EV 71) are the most common. It is common for people to get HFMD during spring, summer, and fall. The infection route includes digestive tract, respiratory tract and contact transmission.

Symptoms

The main symptoms are maculopapules and herpes in the hands, feet, mouth and other parts. In a few severe cases, meningitis,encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, pulmonary edema, circulatory disorders, etc., are mainly caused by EV71 infection, and the main cause of death is severe brainstem encephalitis and neurogenetic pulmonary edema.

Treatment

HFMD is usually not serious, and nearly all people recover in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment. But you should attention to:

•First, isolate the children. Children should be isolated until 1 week after the symptoms disappear. Contact should pay attention to disinfection and isolation to avoid cross infection

•Symptomatic treatment, good oral care

•Clothes and bedding should be clean, Clothing should be comfortable, soft and often changed

•Cut your baby’s nails short and wrap your baby’s hands if necessary to prevent scratching rashes

•The baby with rash on the buttocks should be cleaned at any time to keep the buttocks clean and dry

•Can take antiviral drugs and supplement vitamin B, C, etc

Prevention

•Wash hands with soap or hand sanitizer before eating, after using the toilet and after going out, do not allow children to drink raw water and eat raw or cold food. Avoid contact with sick children

•Caregivers should be wash hands before touch children, after changing diapers, after handling faeces, and properly dispose of sewage

•Baby bottles, pacifiers should be fully cleaned before and after use

•During the epidemic of this disease should not take children to crowd gathering, poor air circulation in public places, pay attention to maintain family environmental hygiene, the bedroom to often ventilation, frequently drying clothes and quilt

•Children with related symptoms should go to medical institutions in time. Children should not contact other children, parents should be timely to the children’s clothing drying or disinfection, the feces of children should be sterilized in time, children with mild cases should be treated and rested at home to reduce cross-infection

•Clean and disinfect toys, personal hygiene utensils and tableware daily
